Embodying True Power Through Holacracy and Role Mapping

In my work with organisations embracing Holacracy and implementing role mapping, I’ve noticed a recurring theme: the journey to accessing true power is deeply personal, yet profoundly impactful in a professional context.

True power isn’t about control or external validation—it’s about self-responsibility and intrinsic strength.

In this post, I’ll explore the essence of personal power, the barriers that often stand in its way, and how connecting with this deeper sense of empowerment can transform both individuals and organisations.

Power as Control vs. Power as Self-Responsibility

Power is often misunderstood. In traditional hierarchies, power tends to manifest as control—directing others, asserting authority, and often seeking validation through external recognition.

But true power, as I’ve come to understand it, is fundamentally different. It’s about self-responsibility: owning your actions, decisions, and impact. As Holacracy practitioners know, distributed power models challenge us to embody this form of leadership at every level.

This perspective resonates with the findings of leadership expert Dr. Brené Brown, who argues in her book Dare to Lead that vulnerability and self-awareness are the cornerstones of courageous leadership. Brown’s research highlights that the ability to take personal responsibility, even when it feels uncomfortable, is what separates authentic leaders from those who rely on traditional, hierarchical power structures.

The Nature of True Power

During a recent conversation with Kajal Pandey, we delved into the complexities of power, and a few key takeaways stayed with me:

  • True Power Is About Self-Responsibility ~ This means owning your choices without blaming others or external circumstances.

  • True Power Does Not Rely on Control ~ It’s not about dominating others but creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

  • True Power Does Not Seek Validation ~ It exists independently of external approval—it’s an internal force.

In a Holacracy-powered organisation, this kind of power is essential. With distributed roles and responsibilities, leaders must model self-responsibility and empower others to do the same.

Where Does Power Live Within You?

One of the most transformative questions I ask my clients is, “Where does power live within you?” It might sound abstract, but it’s rooted in a practice known as somatic awareness—connecting with the physical sensations that reflect your internal state.

For me, power feels rooted in my lungs. When I focus on my breathing, pulling my shoulders back and taking deep, steady breaths, I feel a sense of clarity and groundedness. For others, power might reside in their posture, their voice, or even the strength of their legs.

Embodied Practices to Access Personal Power

Here are some simple yet powerful techniques to connect with your sense of true power:

  • Breathing Exercises ~ Slow, intentional breathing can calm your nervous system and help you centre yourself.

  • Posture Awareness ~ Standing tall, with your feet firmly planted, can convey and instil a sense of inner strength.

  • Movement Practices ~ Activities like yoga or tai chi can help you explore how power feels in your body.

These practices aren’t just about personal growth—they can also enhance professional performance. By embodying power in a grounded way, you can navigate the complexities of Holacracy and role mapping with greater confidence and clarity.

Overcoming Barriers to True Power

Accessing your true power isn’t always straightforward. Many of us face barriers, whether physical (like tension or fatigue), mental (like self-doubt), or emotional (like fear of failure).

Identifying the Barriers

Start by noticing when and where you feel disconnected from your power. Is it during high-pressure meetings? When you’re faced with criticism? Recognising these moments is the first step to overcoming them.

Practical Steps to Reconnect

  • Physical Practices ~ Regular exercise or stretching can release tension and improve your energy flow.

  • Mental Reframing ~ Challenge limiting beliefs with affirmations or journaling.

  • Emotional Exploration ~ Work with a coach or therapist to unpack deeper emotional barriers.

As I guide organisations through Holacracy transitions and Leading Beyond Hierarchy, I often see how these individual practices ripple out to the collective. When leaders and team members feel personally empowered, they bring that energy to their roles, enhancing collaboration and alignment.

The Impact of True Power

Connecting with your true power isn’t just a personal achievement—it’s a professional game-changer. When you lead from a place of self-responsibility and intrinsic strength, you inspire trust, foster innovation, and create space for others to thrive.

In a Holacracy context, this kind of leadership is essential. By embracing role mapping and embodying true power, you can help your organisation achieve the agility and alignment that distributed governance promises.
